An earthquake struck off the New Zealand coast, prompted a tsunami warning

New Zealand’s Civil Defense says a preliminary 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the northwest coast of New Zealand. There is no tsunami threat for Hawaii at this time according to NOAA’s/NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The quake was about 6 miles or 10 km deep.

New Zealand’s government says the threat of a tsunami and unusual waves has passed. A series of strong aftershocks some 5.0 and greater have accompanied the main quake.
