Toru Obata, the President of Nexco East, the owner of the Kanetsu Expressway where all this happened issued an apology last week when heavy snow brought the expressway to a stop. Many workers, reportedly up to 700 worked this past week to rescue people who were trapped in feet of snow. Even troops from Japan’s Self Defense Force delivered food, water, and gas to those trapped. According to NHK multiple people were taken to the hospital. The traffic jam apparently was a little over 9 miles long. This all started last Wednesday and continued for days. It is reported some were stuck in traffic for 40 hours.
