Red sprite lightning caught over Hawaii

Last Updated 2 months ago by Devontae Jackson.

Image courtesy of the International Gemini Observatory in Hawaii.

This photo was caught over Hawaii back in 2017, featured this year by National Science Foundation’s NOIR Lab. A telescope at the observatory caught this image over 13,000 feet. The telescope takes photos about every 30 seconds and right when it snapped a photo it caught this phenomenon. The phenomenon you see in the photo is red sprite lightning at the top and blue jet lightning at the bottom.
